Simply just poking fun at the corny-ness from the mario cartoons, namely the super mario bros super show. ( Something I've in mind for a while but just didnt get to it until today. )
Now I dont hate the show, I actually do like it. Hell, Its the only mario cartoons I'll ever have ( tis a guilty pleasure lol ) But seriously, I dont know what the hell they were thinking when they made the super show/comics. My main issue with it has to be the food thing...everything is about food, and the food in the show isnt even italian...or real for that matter. Just because its a kids show doesnt mean you gotta be stupid about it. Actually put effort into the jokes...not just stereotypical nonsense. It just looks like you dont know what the hell you're doing. * dont take this as some sort of angry rant. Its more on the light hearted side xD
And yes, the foods i've mentioned here were actually in the show/comic(s), I kid you not lol

Back in the 80s, character development wasn't the #1 priority for game developers, who wanted us, the players, to project our personalities onto the characters. Hence, this was evidently the result of DiC struggling to flesh out the Bros. on a very low budget.
